2016 Latin American Film Festival
Over the past several years the Art has partnered with UIUC’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) to bring Champaign-Urbana the Latin American Film Festival (LAFF). Due to a leadership transition at CLACS, this year’s festival will be much smaller but still running! We will be showing two powerhouse films in the end of September/early October. Each movie will be shown just once, so stay tuned for conformation of dates and times. You won’t want to miss these extraordinary films.
IXCANUL is Jayro Bustamante’s explosive debut film, in which we see a culture clash of modernity in the land of the Kaqchikel in the Guatemalan highlands. The film was Guatemala’s first submission for the Oscars, winner of a top prize at Berlin, and more top prizes elsewhere. (7:00pm on Mon, 9/26)
NISE: THE HEART OF MADNESS is a Brazilian film about Dr. Nise da Silveira, jailed for six years as an alleged communist, who took over the occupational therapy wing at a hospital in Brazil in the ‘40s, treating schizophrenics, and rejecting traditional EST in favor of painting and giving patients street dogs – and subsequently changed the course and character of modern art in Brazil. Winner of the Tokyo Fest Grand Prix and the Audience Award at Rio last year! (7:00pm on Mon, 10/3)
