The Art Theater, currently housed in a 104-year-old movie theater in the heart of downtown Champaign, IL, is a community-driven organization, a vibrant & welcoming space where audiences new & old can enjoy a classic cinema experience. Our mission is to cultivate engaged audiences for art house, independent, and foreign films. As the only independent theater in our community, we are committed to providing a dynamic environment of alternative theatrical exhibition.
We regularly partner with local community groups, cultural institutions, and the University of Illinois & Parkland College communities to maintain program diversity through a broad range of cinema. A sample of these programs includes: the Essential Cinema series, which offers a global roster of must-see films from the history of cinema; Late Nights at the Art, which features new genre films and cult classics; the Brilliant Corners series, which screens experimental, documentary and other alternative film forms; and Women on Top, a monthly series dedicated to celebrating women directors. We host regular discussions, panels, and expert Q&As after screenings of films to celebrate the discussion of film.
In recognition of our exceptional programming and commitment to community partnerships, the Art Theater was named an official member of the Sundance Institute’s Art House Project, joining some of the most prestigious independent art-house theaters in the country at the leading edge of innovative programming and cultural contribution.
The Art Theater is a program of the Art Film Foundation, a Champaign-based 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to promoting culture and education through cinema.
