Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas

This screening is part of the 2019 Jewish Film Festival

NR, 52 minutes

A post-show discussion will be led by Jerold Siena, Professor of Voice at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Set almost entirely in a Chinese restaurant, DREAMING OF A JEWISH CHRISTMAS is an offbeat, irreverent musical documentary that tells the story of a group of Jewish songwriters, including Irving Berlin, Mel Tormé, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans, Gloria Shayne Baker and Johnny Marks, who wrote the soundtrack to Christianity’s most musical holiday. It’s an amazing tale of immigrant outsiders who became irreplaceable players in pop culture’s mainstream – a generation of songwriters who found in Christmas the perfect holiday in which to imagine a better world, and for at least one day a year, make us believe in it. (2017, Larry Weinstein, Canada, English, CC not available, 52 min, NR)

Hannah Cohen’s Holy Communion

The screening of DREAMING OF A JEWISH CHRISTMAS will be preceded by the short film HANNAH COHEN’S HOLY COMMUNION.

Set in Dublin in the 1970’s this film explores a rarely glimpsed Ireland, as seen through the eyes of spirited seven year old, Hannah Cohen. Hannah can’t wait to make her Holy Communion – only problem is she’s Jewish. (2012, Shimmy Marcus, UK, English, CC not available, 13 min, NR)
