Migrant Solidarity

Migrant Solidarity is a nation-wide series of films presented by movie theaters and community centers across the U.S. as an act of cinematic solidarity with migrants. The series is presented in collaboration with The Seventh Art Stand, a national initiative promoting civil rights discussion through film.

Migrant Solidarity marks our second collaboration with The Seventh Art Stand. Previously, in April 2017, The Art Theater was one of 50 venues that partnered with organizers of an Anti-Islamophobia series to show films and host discussions that amplified the voices and stories of people affected by the Travel Ban. We are excited to collaborate with The Seventh Art Stand again this year to present Migrant Solidarity — a four-part series focused on stories of migrants in present-day U.S. as well as early 20th century. The series stands as a reaffirmation of The Art Theater’s continued commitment to provide a welcoming space for marginalized voices and stories in a time of intensifying hatred and violence towards some of the most vulnerable members of society. Films in the series screen on Tuesdays at 7pm.

The series starts on Tuesday, October 16th at 7pm with Sundance Audience Award-Winner THIS IS HOME: A REFUGEE STORY, “an engaging, respectful, and realistic account of refugee resettlement in America” (Dr. Diya Abdo). The screening will be paired with a voter registration drive immediately before showtime and after the credits. The following Tuesday, in MI VIDA DENTRO (MY LIFE INSIDE) Mexican director Lucía Gajá follows Rosa Estela Olvera — a migrant from Mexico — and asks critical questions about the roles of race and immigration status in a controversial court case against her. BISBEE ’17, a newly released documentary that focuses on issues at the intersection of immigration and labor in the American South-West in early 20th century, plays on Tuesday, October 30th. Last but not least, on Tuesday, November 6th TIME FOR ILHAN tells the story of the first Muslim Somali-American woman lawmaker in the United States who was elected a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives in the November 2016 elections.

All films in the series will be followed by a post-show discussion.*
