A surprise hit in 1995, Paul W.S. Anderson’s MORTAL KOMBAT pairs brilliant martial arts choreography and the most pulse-pounding techno/industrial soundtrack of the 90s. Based on the popular video game, the film introduces us to our heroes (Liu King, Sonia Blade, Johnny Cage), who are conscripted by the mysterious, and more than a little wacky, Raidan (played by HIGHLANDER’s Christopher Lambert, having a great time) to fight the forces of Evil in a battle for the soul of the world, a battle called Mortal Kombat (with a K). The battle takes place in a kind of doom-laden version of Thailand, where we meet our villains (Shao Tsung, Goro, Kano, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, & the rest of the goons). The film introduced us to the career of the other Paul Anderson (director of the RESIDENT EVIL franchise as well as some … not-so-good stuff), and introduced lots of 12 year olds to KMFDM. (That’s not a drug, Ma.) So on September 13, you’re going to need to “GET OVER HERE!” for a free screening of MORTAL KOMBAT. (1995, Paul W.S. Anderson, US, 101 min, PG-13)
