[(S o S)] Presents: Robot & Frank

PG-13, 89 minutes

In our fifth installment of Science on Screen Amy LaViers, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at UIUC will host a post-show discussion following the screening of Jake Shreier’s sci-fi comedy Robot & Frank (2012). Dr. LaViers’ primary research area is Dynamics and Controls of robotic systems. She is currently leading a UIUC RAD Lab project focused on creating an artistic piece to help reframe popular perceptions of robotics, technology, and the internet of things. More information about the project can be found here: http://www.timetocompile.com

Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank’s son chooses a different option: against the old man’s wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. What follows is an often hilarious and heartwarming story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places.
