Suspiria (4K Restoration)

R, 98 minutes

The University of Illinois Press presents the 4K Restoration of Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA for a special one-night engagement. Andrew Cooper, author of Dario Argento from the Contemporary Film Directors series, will be holding a post-show Skype Q&A to discuss both SUSPIRIA and the director’s incredible body of work. University of Illinois Press will be on site with a special pop-up bookshop with books available for purchase.

Celebrating 40 Years as one of the genre’s most terrifying – and breathtakingly beautiful – classics, Argento’s 1977 chiller stars Jessica Harper as Suzy, an American dancer who travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives late on a stormy night, she is shocked to find herself knocking on the door without an answer, seeming to suggest the school is empty – except for the terrified-looking student she sees fleeing from the school and into the rainy dark. Returning the next day (after the audience is treated to one of cinema’s most famously-constructed murders), Suzy is admitted to her new school, a gorgeous but menacing house of horrors filled with strange noises, stranger teachers, a terrifying history, and a rapidly increasing body count… (1977, Dario Argento, Italy, English, R, DCP)

Presented in in its original 98 minute runtime, rescanned from the original uncut, uncensored Italian 35mm camera negative in 4K resolution at Technicolor Rome in Italy, with the supervision of Argento’s director of photography Lucian Tovoli. The soundtrack is restored to the original booming quadraphonic mix.
